Job Description

The Control and Optimization Group (OCG) at Pacific Northwest National Lab seeks an intern to conduct research focusing on coupled power and communication (cyber-physical) systems restoration. In this position, the candidate is expected to

  • Develop statistical model for coupled power transmission, distribution and communication systems for power system restoration studies;

  • Develop optimization algorithms to support restoration decision-making.

Perform steady-state and dynamic simulations for coupled power system and communication system systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications

The candidate of this position should:

  • have a solid background in power systems and/or communication systems;

  • be familiar with statistical modeling and signal processing;

  • be familiar with optimization formulation;

  • be skilled at programming in Python, Julia, etc., and preferably has expertise on optimization modeling packages such as pulp, pyomo or JuMP.

Relevant research experience in cyber-physical systems and/or power system restoration is preferred.

Experience with mixed integer programming in power systems is a plus.

Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program focusing on power system or communication system.

3.75 GPA or higher is preferred
