Job Description

The Nuclear and Criticality Safety Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment supporting challenging and interesting nuclear Research and Development (R&D) projects with national and international impact. We are seeking a Nuclear Safety Engineer with a strong technical background and proven ability and competency to: (1) prepare and evaluate nuclear safety hazards and accident analyses; (2) anticipate, recognize, and monitor issues in nuclear and radiological safety analysis associated with the work and work operations in an R&D environment; and (3) prescribe compliant and creative methods to resolve nuclear safety issues.

The 325 Building Radiochemical Processing Laboratory (325RPL) is a DOE Hazard Category 2 non-reactor nuclear facility where the majority of nuclear R&D activities are performed at PNNL. The successful candidate will be responsible for documentation and implementation of safety analyses associated with the 325RPL Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), assure compliance with the Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), perform unreviewed safety question (USQ) evaluations, and train facility management and staff in support of implementation of these safety basis documents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of relevant experience. Advanced degree and 8+ years of relevant experience. Professional license and/or certification may be preferred.

  • The ability to obtain a DOE security clearance.

  • The ability to obtain Radiological Worker I qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 15+ years of relevant experience. Advanced degree and 13+ years of relevant experience. Professional license and/or certification may be preferred.

The individual must possess strong technical and operational experience in safety analysis and nuclear safety, preferably in an R&D environment; must be self-motivated and self-directed; and recognized as a technical expert. Proven writing and verbal communication skills are required. The incumbent must possess good negotiation skills and must be able to effectively communicate with a variety of levels of staff and external DOE clients in providing effective and compliant solutions to safety analysis/nuclear safety issues. The incumbent must also have experience in preparing complex technical procedures, reports, assessment responses and correspondence for internal and external DOE customers. In-depth knowledge and a history of successful implementation of DOE ES&H and Conduct of Operations regulations, policies, programs and standards are preferred.

A strong background in the interpretation and application of DOE requirements for development and implementation of nuclear safety analysis, the unreviewed safety question process, and technical safety requirements is required. The position also requires the individual to understand nuclear safety requirements in the context of R&D activities, R&D operations and R&D management systems. The individual should have experience with the development of hazards and accident analysis associated with nuclear facility safety bases. The individual should be capable of writing robust nuclear safety implementing procedures and providing all levels of training necessary to implement changes to the safety basis.
