Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Nuclear Sciences Division is seeking a Nuclear Material Storage and Transportation Advisor responsible for understanding national and global trends, regulations, policies, and technical issues for the storage and transportation of spent nuclear fuel. The Nuclear Material Storage and Transportation Advisor will work with Sector Managers from across the organization to deliver successful outcomes tailored to PNNL and sponsor needs.
Work with senior PNNL leaders to develop programmatic strategies, utilizing existing PNNL capabilities, and partnerships with other national laboratories and industry to meet Department of Energy (DOE), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) objectives for the storage, transportation, and disposal of fissile nuclear and high radioactive material.
Create and implement strategies coordinated with sector and division plans that will enable PNNL to deliver cutting-edge solutions to DOE, NNSA, and NRC objectives in partnership with industry and other national laboratories focused in the areas of storage and transportation of fissile nuclear and high radioactive material.
Inform and support business activities and interacts with senior executives at sponsor locations and PNNL senior leadership to identify and shape future research and development (R&D) opportunities, both within PNNL and across partner national laboratories and industry.
Work across PNNL to ensure the next generation laboratory capabilities and investments are leveraged to maximize impact on DOE Energy & Environmental Programs.
Develop and grow relationships with other DOE labs, research institutions, and industry to collaborate on large-scale projects of national importance.
Mentor and guide mid to senior level staff to develop their technical and leadership competencies.
BS in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years’ experience
MS in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering with 6+ years’ experience
PhD in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering with 3+ years’ experience
Demonstrated program and project leadership experience in the area of radioactive material storage, transportation, and disposal, with expertise in the area of criticality safety analysis and/or Monte Carlo simulations.
Proven record of success building external collaborations with leading research organizations, national laboratories, universities and industrial partners.
Demonstrated experience working with DOE, NNSA, NRC, and private industry.
Established leadership role in professional organizations.
Strong understanding of national and international policies and regulatory frameworks for the transportation of radioactive materials.
Proven ability to create and execute national level strategy, identify and interact with key stakeholders, prepare program proposals, and generate future R&D or mission application directions.
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral skills; the ability to effectively lead interdisciplinary teams, and a strong orientation toward advancing the state-of-the-art technical capabilities.
Ability to obtain a security clearance.
