Job Description

The Reactor Materials and Mechanical Design Group (RMMD) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) advances fundamental materials science and provides the scientific basis for fusion and fission reactor materials development, light water reactor life extension, safe storage of spent fuel, and design of materials and systems for extreme operating conditions. RMMD is a world-class materials science and mechanical engineering organization with more than 40 highly qualified and experienced staff—including internationally recognized scientists and Fellows of professional societies—delivering impactful research for multiple sponsors.

Primary job duties include:

  • Execution of mechanical testing activities and developing prototypical mechanical solutions in support of multiple projects and organizations, both internally and externally.

  • The candidate should be familiar with standard mechanical testing techniques and competent in contemporary drafting and drawing tools for communicating detailed fabrication and assembly specifications for mechanical systems.

  • In addition, the candidate should have experience or be knowledgeable of tools and methods for prototypical mechanical fabrication.

  • The candidate should demonstrate an ability to continually learn and gain mastery in the latest tools, techniques, and methods related to the required skills above.

  • Must be able to work within teams of experts from multiple fields and adapt contributions to provide integrated, wholistic solutions to serve project and client objectives.

  • The candidate will be required to regularly document their activities for reporting to clients and supervisors. Good oral and written communication skills are required.

  • Contributing professional who is building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applies and interprets standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies within specialty. Continues developing technical expertise and knowledge. Develops new skills.

  • Provides solutions to an assortment of problems using conventional methods where causal relationships are progressively difficult to establish.

  • Contributes to technical products such as: Topical reports, Peer-reviewed publications, patents/intellectual property

  • Continues developing technical expertise and knowledge. Develops new skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience or MS/MA with 0-1 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Systems Engineering

  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical testing or developing prototypical mechanical solutions.

  • Ability to independently develop novel solutions for scenarios where standard or accepted approaches have not yet been developed.
