The Applied Materials and Manufacturing group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a mechanical testing engineer to contribute to the development of high performance materials and innovative solid-phase processing approaches. This position will support research in next generation lightweight vehicles, components for energy systems, and other areas where improvements in materials performance and energy efficiency are needed. Applicants will work with other researchers to perform mechanical and other performance testing of specimens of formed or joined materials, primarily metals. Applicants will also help design, assemble, modify, and troubleshoot testing equipment and develop new test procedures as needed. The position holder will:
Apply basic knowledge of engineering, physics, chemistry, metallurgy and materials science to specify and develop mechanical testing approaches and solutions to testing problems. The ideal candidate would use prior experience to draw correlations between material structure, properties and performance to help drive materials testing recommendations.
Structure and write analytical results, methods, and procedures, and serve as a contributing author for technical reports or publications and intellectual property/patents.
Leverage direct experience with mechanical test equipment (tensile/compression, fatigue, corrosion, hydrogen and high pressure systems) to independently complete specimen testing and evaluation.
Complete work and report results on time and on budget, with limited guidance from experienced staff.
Communicate with a variety of staff (scientists/machinists) to coordinate specimen fabrication, preparation, testing, and perform final data reporting.
May lead tasks and coordinate the work of others as needed and mentor other junior staff.
- BS/BA degree and 0-1 years of relevant work experience or MS/MA with 0-1 years of experience. The position requires the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with scientists, engineers, and others with a diversity of backgrounds.
BS/BA or MS/MA in mechanical engineering, materials science, or related field
Extensive knowledge of and hands-on experience in mechanical testing using applicable standards and specifications
Strong writing skills
Mechanical drawing skills
A demonstrated ability to manage lab spaces along with a track record of contributing to operational safety is a plus.
