Job Description

The purpose of this position is to support the implementation and maintenance of project management control systems, including cost and schedule control and reporting systems to assist line and project managers in tracking progress toward meeting project objectives. The intern will be involved in:

  • Preparing proposals to deliver breakthrough science and technology to meet key national needs

  • Developing detailed project controls plans, statements of work, and other types of planning documents

  • Constructing time-phased budgets, work schedules, work breakdown structures, and control account plans

  • Creating project workflows (e.g., Gantt charts, PERT, and CPM network diagrams)

The intern will work under the direction, guidance, and review of a more senior Project Controls Professional. The staff member will:

  • Develop a working knowledge of project controls systems, tools, and techniques

  • Develop skills in the organization’s three core competencies: (1) technical and disciplinary skills, (2) business insight and judgment, and (3) relationship management

  • Become familiar with and begin to apply knowledge of applicable PNNL policies, procedures, the Research and Project Management and Operations (M&O) Program, assigned work, and customer expectations

  • Work simultaneously on different projects or with multiple customers

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be matriculated/enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some familiarity with planning and management systems, including planning software (i.e., Primavera, Microsoft Project) is desired

  • Some previous exposure to project management concepts, terminology, and methodologies; knowledge of general business administration

  • Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and good verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience with Microsoft Office software products such as Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, is preferred

  • Coursework in management information systems and databases (e.g. SQL, Access, and Visual Basic)

Preferred Education

  • Preferred Degree Programs:Project Management, Engineering / Engineering Management, Management Information Systems (MIS), Construction Management, or Business/Finance/Accounting.
