Job Description

Applies engineering and technical principles to the design and development of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems. Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases. Plans and conducts projects after analysis of functional and operational requirements. May consult with and lead cross-functional teams

Support activities include installing, configuring, and maintaining Linux operating systems within at PNNL. Analyzes and resolves problems associated with the operating system's servers, hardware, applications, and software. Monitors systems performance and ensures compliance with security standards. The Systems administrator should have experience in supporting large enterprise environments by administering and maintaining Linux operating systems servers, virtual environment and SAN systems. Create and maintain documentation to include design documentation, processes/procedures, environment diagrams, etc.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

IT Engineer level 3:

Selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Makes key contributions in setting technical direction. Builds effective project teams with membership across a group, S&E domain and/or directorate. Contributes to the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments.

IT Engineer level 4:

Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high-risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Develops, and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. May contribute to directorate level operational improvement activities. Leading organizational teams that proactively identify and promote new capabilities within a division and S&E domain and advance the directorate strategy. Mentoring staff and peers across directorate. Leading through operational assignments that benefit the group and directorate.

Responsibilities:

  • Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with client and project requirements

  • Experience with Redhat Linux and other flavors of Linux

  • Install and configure new systems

  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures

  • Perform systems monitoring to verify availability and integrity of hardware and server resources

  • Perform backup operations as needed

  • Handle ongoing maintenance e.g., hot fixes, software upgrades, etc.

  • Strong customer facing skills

  • Ability to establish a solid working relationship with the customer, technical staff, managers, peers and teaming partners

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 5 years of experience, Master's degree with 3 years of experience, PhD with 1 years of experience. A minimum of 13 years of relevant work experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 7 years of experience, Master's degree with 5 years of experience, PhD with 3 years of experience. A minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience may be considered.

  • Utilize Linux scripting (BASH, Ruby, Ansible, etc.) to optimize and automate system administrator tasks

  • Enterprise experience with centralized configuration management tools like Ansible Tower and RHN Satellite

  • Thorough knowledge of system internals including systemd and firewalld

  • Experience remediating system vulnerabilities

  • Experience in establishing and maintaining relationships with business stakeholders/users

  • Enterprise experience following policies and procedures for change and incident management

  • Excellent application integration troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose system problems

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Azure or AWS cloud experience deploying and maintaining infrastructure services

  • MS Azure Administrator Certification or AWS Certified Sysops Administrator

  • Experience with implementing security baselines (CISSP/SCAP) through automation

  • Experience with monitoring systems (OMD/other)

  • RedHat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)

  • Certified Information Security Professional (CISSP)

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
