Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks an IT engineer to focus on support of high performance computing and data systems that perform simulation and high-throughput analysis of complex biological and environmental data. The EMSL is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility that provides innovative and breakthrough experimental and computational science that addresses DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) programs by providing access to more than 75 state-of-the-art instrumental and high performance computing capabilities. EMSL users address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions. The position requires an ability and willingness to assist EMSL staff and users to understand and adhere to the EMSL data management policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate should have experience in modern Linux systems administration and strong interest in cloud-native methodologies, including continuous deployment, containerization, and orchestration technology. The candidate is expected to work in the Molecular Science Computing team to administer systems to support scientific research at the EMSL user facility.

  • Applies engineering and technical principles to the design and development of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems.

  • Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases.

  • Receives instruction on required tasks and reports results on time and on budget, while working under guidance from experienced staff.

  • Builds and maintains effective internal relationships on individual or team level.

  • Develops conceptual knowledge of scientific or engineering theories, practices and procedures within specialization.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience; MS/MA/MEng with 0-1 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of modern systems administration and/or devops methodologies.

  • Strong understanding of one or more enterprise-grade Linux distributions, including package management, systems configuration, and networking.

  • Experience with the kubernetes container orchestration system.

  • Working knowledge of Linux container technologies such as docker, cri-o, lxc, or rkt.

  • Working knowledge of collaboration tools such as JIRA, Gitlab, and git.

  • Excellent communications, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
