The Position:

This role is about leveraging technology by utilizing dynamic and innovative solutions with a simple and focused mission around building, improving, and maintaining IT systems and applications for PNNL’s Software Engineering Division. The position will enable cross team collaboration on the design and implementation of solutions to meet the needs of the laboratory. The position will be accountable for the vision, direction, and implementation of Software Engineering architectural principles and fundamental building blocks for use in developing solutions necessary for major improvements and new developments.

Job Description:

  • Contribute as a key member of an agile team that develops, implements, and manages operational and analytic data pipelines in support of individual customer needs, ongoing operations, and software project investments;

  • Collaborate effectively on diverse teams (e.g., Portfolio / Project managers, domain experts, users, and software engineering team) to design and deploy innovative data solutions in support of business information systems across the enterprise;

  • Provide individual and collaborative contributions to software development and analytic projects across a broad range of technologies and subject areas;

  • Develop and Demonstrate domain expertise, foster a healthy culture of innovation and an ethical code of conduct.

  • Meet expectations and standards for quality, safety, and security.

  • Build strong relationships with peers, upper management, and other relevant internal/external stakeholders.

  • Assimilate knowledge quickly in a variety of domains;

  • Continuously scanning the technology landscape for new approaches and methods to achieve results that can be incorporated into the enterprise;

  • Provide customers with a professional experience when requesting application development and support.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level II:

  • Participation in work planning to gather and define analytics requirements

  • Familiarity with key business domains (e.g., Finance, Human Resources, Project Management, etc.) and common processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to complete assigned tasks, meet deadlines, and manage priorities

  • Foundational understanding of dimensional and relational data design principles and practices

  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose challenging technical problems and recommend solutions

  • Solid problem-solving skills: attention to detail and the ability to troubleshoot and remedy system/data issues under pressing deadlines

  • Demonstrated knowledge of SQL query development, stored procedures, and optimization approaches

  • Experience with data warehouse concepts and techniques and demonstrated ability to support a nightly production processing capability

  • Familiarity in event based and API data transfer concepts and solutions.

  • Experience with building basic Extract, Load, and Transform processes to move and integrate data

  • Desired experience in delivering data solutions that support cloud, on-premise, and hybrid architectures for application and analytic use.

  • Foundational conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling, process analysis, and data quality analysis skills using modern tools and techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to optimize data structures and associated functions and procedures

  • Understanding of XML and related languages.

Level III:

  • Ability to lead work planning exercises to gather and define operational and analytic requirements

  • Ability to assimilate knowledge quickly in a variety of domains and adept at leading discussions to articulate questions that lead to development of user stories

  • Demonstrated ability to self-direct, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and priorities

  • In-depth knowledge of formal dimensional and relational data design principles and practices

  • Demonstrated ability to solve challenging technical problems with innovative solutions

  • Solid problem-solving skills: attention to detail and the ability to troubleshoot and remedy system/data issues under pressing deadlines.

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of SQL query development, complex stored procedures, and advanced optimization techniques

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience MS/MA with 3 years of experience PhD with 1 year of experience

  • Experience with the following tools (Jira, Confluence)

  • Experience leveraging Agile methodologies

  • Experience with Cloud services (i.e., cloud storage types, analytics tools, big data solutions)

  • Experience with Oracle Data Integration Suite or similar Extract, Load, and Transform capability
