Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks a systems administrator with experience in supporting scientific computational platforms and technologies. The EMSL is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility that provides innovative and breakthrough experimental and computational science that addresses DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) programs by providing access to more than 75 state-of-the-art instrumental and high-performance computing capabilities. EMSL users address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions.
The candidate should have experience with medium- to large-scale datacenter operations, commensurate systems administration skills, and familiarity with data management and the FAIR principles. The position requires an ability and willingness to work with EMSL users, EMSL staff, and PNNL colleagues to support scientific computational services. The candidate must therefore be adept at collaborating with interdisciplinary technical teams through strong communication, interpersonal, and technical skills and experience in addition to be willing to assist domain-expert researchers with a variety of computational experience. The candidate will also support to research in areas important to EMSL and PNNL. EMSL’s computational approach is broad-ranging and cutting-edge. Applies engineering and technical principles to the design and development of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems. Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases. Plans and conducts projects after analysis of functional and operational requirements. May consult with and lead cross-functional teams.
Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, and security. Communicates the importance within the work team.
Collaborate with researchers on the development and innovative application of advanced computational services, supporting novel data analysis , visual analytics, or other computational techniques in service to research problems relevant to DOE-BER missions.
Linux systems administration
Understanding of networking principles and operations
Minimum Qualifications
BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 year of experience
Preferred Qualifications
Some combination of:
Experience with container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes, as well as the ecosystem of technologies commonly used in modern orchestration stacks, such as Ceph, Helm, Docker, Podman, Keycloak, etc.
Experience in data management and scientific computing, including data warehousing, workflow development, and automation, including common toolsets such as Globus and HPSS.
Experience in HPC systems administration, including deployment tools like xCAT, Chef, and Ansible; resource management and scheduler tools such as Slurm; parallel filesystems such as Lustre and BeeGFS.
Bonus: some experience with software development tools and methodology, especially continuous integration/continuous deployment platforms like GitLab-CI and Jenkins.
