Job Description

As a National Laboratory, we offer a unique blend of opportunities for the exceptional candidate. This position’s main focus encompasses the research, development, and documentation of business and system requirements for information applications relevant to the administration of PNNL’s business systems. Your work will include: Support the work maintaining and operating existing business information systems, partnering with clients to define, build and deliver innovative software solutions to complex business and scientific problems; working with effective teams from multiple disciplines; researching and writing business requirements. Work with teams and users to implement requirements and validate expected outcomes. As a member of a stable team you are expected to develop knowledge of the goals of projects or business partners you are supporting.

Your key responsibilities and accountabilities would include:

  • Perform research and analysis of existing systems and business rules to establish requirements for new product features and maintenance of existing systems.

  • Work collaboratively as part of an agile development team to mature user stories by facilitating requirements discussions, providing details and documenting acceptance criteria.

  • Support engineering teams through the development, implementation, and operation of business applications.

  • Provide individual contribution to supporting software releases including testing, facilitating product demos, holding team retrospectives, and investigating issues.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level II:

Applies engineering principles and theories in developing technical approaches to solve challenges. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives. Works independently on standard tasks. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Effectively teams and shares resources to optimize solutions. Mentors junior staff and students.

Level III:

Selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Makes key contributions in setting technical direction. Builds effective project teams with membership across a group, S&E domain and/or directorate. Contributes to the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience, or MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience, or Relevant Associate’s degree and 6 years of relevant work experience, or High school diploma and 10 years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, or MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience

  • Experience with the following tools (Jira, Confluence)

  • Experience leveraging Agile methodologies

  • Experience with Cloud services (i.e., cloud storage types, analytics tools, big data solutions)

  • Experience with Oracle Data Integration Suite or similar Extract, Load, and Transform capability

  • Enhance personal technical and professional skills through active mentoring and training;

  • Assimilate knowledge quickly in multiple domains;

  • Exceptional communicator with both technical and nontechnical audiences

  • Knowledge and experience writing user stories (business requirements) for the purpose of developing of complex software

  • Experience leveraging iterative development practices such as Scrum

  • Knowledge and experience leveraging SQL to mine and analyze data

  • Customer service oriented and approachable

  • Deliver results with highest level of professionalism and integrity

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities

  • Experience using Agile work management tools such as Jira

  • Familiarity of at least one programming language

  • Knowledge of UI/UX best practices for web and mobile applications

  • Able to read and write complex SQL queries

  • Experience developing wireframes, mockups, and/or use cases

  • Experience acting in a Scrum Master role

  • Experience testing client facing web based applications

  • Knowledge of APIs and RESTful Web Services

  • Ability to read and write code
