As an Internal Communications Professional, you will help create and implement an integrated strategy to communicate with PNNL staff. You will modernize channels of communication, optimize the content submission pipeline, and lead or co-lead the design of campaigns across multiple platforms that deliver on PNNL’s staff experience and culture expectations.
Using strategic thinking, planning, and project management skills, you will conceptualize and execute highly impactful internal communications campaigns and help implement new processes, planning, and technology implementation to ensure a contemporary and impactful internal communications strategy.
As a key member of the Communications team, you will provide counsel to Communications Division Leadership and colleagues to suggest impactful internal communications approaches, technologies, and an actionable measurement strategy based in data and analytics. You will collaborate extensively with colleagues to create an editorial planning calendar process for internal communications, and integrate as appropriate with external and social media planning.
You will identify key performance indicators and help others implement tracking mechanisms to integrate into communications efforts. You will provide feedback on internal channels and campaigns, and suggest improvements to communications efforts based on measurable metrics and data.
Authority and Accountability
Build a robust editorial planning calendar process to support the Mission Support Communications Team, creating a proactive, integrated schedule of messaging deliverables
Manage the lab intranet content, helping to inform and connect employees with a steady stream of engaging curated news, visual home page content, and up-to-date event calendar
Oversee the content on PNNL’s internal digital signage network according to the internal communications strategy; prioritize, verify quality, and upload contributed content
Collaborate with senior Communications Division leaders to deliver the Laboratory Director’s messages to staff through appropriate channels, focusing on timeliness, efficiency, and high quality
Edit proposed all-staff messages and distribute them through appropriate channels based on PNNL posting policies
Provide strategic and tactical counsel and guidance for individual colleagues who seek to publicize information to PNNL staff
Create a measurement strategy that includes regular measurement of communications tool effectiveness and site usage, to measure the engagement with, and impact of, internal communications efforts
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to create and implement strategic communication plans for use in internal communications
Vision to develop and drive a communications framework that engages and inspires staff around PNNL’s mission, leadership principles, culture, activities, and milestones
Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams including writers, editors, designers, photographers, programmers, developers, internal clients, and project managers
Experience in management and operation of an organizational intranet
Demonstrated ability to improve existing communication channels, that inform and resonate with employees
Demonstrated expertise in applying measurements for all internal communications related activities and materials, including measuring and analyzing intranet site performance
A deep understanding and ability to take advantage of industry trends as applied to modern internal communications approaches
Track record of focus and working well under pressure, during tight deadlines, with humor, tact, and professionalism
Exhibit excellence in all areas of customer service
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a science relevant to PNNL’s research
Five (5) years of related experience; or advanced degree plus two (2) years of proven success contributing to a strategic, internal communications function for a large, complex organization, especially one focused on science, health, and/or technology
A demonstrated portfolio of specific projects and expertise in application of current technologies relevant to the internal communications function
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Bachelor's degree plus 7 years of experience or advanced degree plus 4 years of experience
Experience with Google Analytics, SharePoint Online, Yammer
Experience and proficiency writing and editing promotional content and summaries about scientific research, as well as related content for the web and social media channels
