PNNL is seeking a laboratory technician to join a team of multidisciplinary scientists working to strengthen national security and advance nuclear science. The ideal candidate will have experience preparing samples for, and operating laboratory instrumentation such as electron microscopies for characterization of materials. At PNNL, a laboratory technician is expected to conduct research and development activities including standard technical procedures that range from routine to specialized, under technical supervision and operate in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes and specialized instrumentation in order to conduct research.
Experience working in a laboratory setting is required
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams is required
Ability to follow procedures to the letter is required
A demonstated track record of safe laboratory work practices, secure handling of information, and strong operational rigor is required
Familiarity working with complex instrumentation is required
High school diploma and 4+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 2+ years of relevant work experience.
Familiarity with the use of scanning electron microscopy and associated analytical tools (i.e. EDS, EBSD, WDS)
Experience preparing samples for electron microscopy or similar analysis techniques
Experience with radioactive materials and nuclear science/technology

Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
