An illustrator in the Visual Communications Group within the Communications Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory works with the Creative Director in collaboration with Laboratory partners to concept, create, and deploy visual illustration solutions that highlight and expand research and scientific concepts through print and electronic media. Focus of this position will be on scientific and technical Illustrations for proposals, journals and publications, presentations and digital media. The illustrator may also work on other design projects as assigned, which include — but are not limited to — marketing brochures, promotional fliers, informational booklets, research reports, scientific presentations, and conference posters. The position is located in Richland, Washington and a full relocation package is offered.
Highly skilled at working with researchers and subject matter experts to translate complex scientific concepts into visually engaging graphics and illustrations and adapt illustration style as needed
Expert at technical, informational, and conceptual illustration - including infographics
Experience and ability to provide quick sketches for approval to be used to assess appropriate level of detail/effort for final, polished illustration
Create illustrations that will be incorporated into a wide variety of print and electronic communications products that support requirements of S&T staff and leaders at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Collaborate with, and provide professional services to, internal S&T clients through the entire life cycle of a project, that is from determining project requirements through successful project delivery
Ability to provide good customer service; patient, attentive, good interpersonal communication skills, time-management skills, and use of positive language.
Strong organization skills and ability to manage time-sensitive project requests and complete such projects within the timeframe provided
Pay strict attention to detail and technical accuracy to translate scientific concepts into detailed, yet visually engaging illustrations
Ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects and meet frequent on-demand deadlines in a fast-paced, highly productive, team environment with little oversight
Serve as a strategic member of a dedicated in-house team of creative professionals under the direction of the Creative Director
Experience using e-forms to input data to utilize the Division workflow system, “CommWorks,” to record assignments, monitor progress, and route work
Ability to work with peers and leadership across the Division to establish effective working relationships
Demonstrated proficiency with industry-standard software, including the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office applications.
Success will be measured through pre-determined metrics, client feedback, team member interactions, and management observation.

Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of experience or advanced degree or 11 years of relevant work experience.
Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of experience or advanced degree plus 2 years of experience or 13+ years of relevant experience
Proficiency in digital animation tools and techniques for motion graphics
Bachelor’s degree in Illustration, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Commercial Art, or a related field
Experience with 3D modeling and rendering software
On occasion, ability to design print materials that ensure consistency through rigorously applying PNNL, and associated, visual identity standards in adherence to the institutional brand style guide
Up-to-date knowledge of current tools and trends in graphic design for print and digital output, including proper file preparation requirements and conventions
Uses industry best practices, including file management, file setup, and print production
Power user of PowerPoint, and in creating highly designed and polished presentations utilizing animation
Strong written and verbal communication skills
