Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber junior or senior high school students for intern assignment within the High School Student Research Intern (HS SRI) Program. This internship provides an opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM - or Computer Science) to work during the academic year with a scientist/mentor in a specified research area. Students attend regular classes in their school for one-half day.

The project orbits around developing novel instrumentation to address current DOE BER challenges in the general area of bioimaging. The intern will aid in data analysis (complex multidimensional multimodal chemical images) and simulations (computer-based using NWCHEM).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in a public or private high school.

  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by June 2019.

  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant Course Work - General mathematics courses (high school level), general chemistry courses (high school level), general physics courses (high school level)

Computer Skills - Windows and iOS required, UNIX desired

Other Desired Skills - Hard working and serious
