Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high caliber sophomore, junior or senior high school students for intern assignments within the Student Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP). This summer internship is a research-based experience for students who are sophomore, juniors or seniors and/or students traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering.

The project involves applying of Chemical Reaction Network Theory (CRNT) tools to get a better understanding of insulin signaling pathway. In particular, the scope of the project was reproducing results of this paper (CRNT elucidates sources of multistability in interferon signaling. PLOS Computation Biology 2017, Otero-Muras I, et al) and further extending it to the mathematical models of insulin signaling. The student is expected to learn about differential equations and their applications to analysis of biological systems. The key concepts he needed to learn were types of bifurcations and use of Jacobian for their analysis. This is also an opportunity to learn computer algebra system Mathematica for symbolic analysis of the systems of ordinary differential equations. At the final stage of the project the proposed models of insulin signaling will be matched against real-world data.
