Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a geospatial data scientist to contribute to and conduct geospatial analysis and algorithm development for research aligned with an established fundamental science program that explores multisector, multiscale, multi-model interactions. This position will require a self-motivated individual who can work with a geographically and institutionally distributed team of scientists and engineers. A successful candidate will apply their skillset to a wide range of science research areas such as energy infrastructure capacity expansion, land use and land cover change interactions with human-natural systems, and more.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS with 2+ years’ experience or advanced degree.

  • Candidate must have a demonstrated knowledge of core geospatial principles; spatial data acquisition, storage, and processing techniques; demonstrated experience in advanced geospatial analytics (e.g., geostatistical analysis, sensitivity analysis, etc.); and developing applications/software with open-source geospatial libraries in Python or R are required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of graph theory principles through network analysis.

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with 3+ years’ or PhD with 1+ years’ experience.

  • Desire candidates with a demonstrated knowledge in graph theory principles through network analysis, and a familiarity with modern machine learning (e.g. PyTorch).
