This position will provide technical/engineering support to the Effluent Management group managing discharges of toxic and radiological effluents, working with established monitoring and sampling program to characterize effluents from the laboratory-operated buildings, verifying compliance with effluent standards and controls, assisting building operations, and monitoring compliance with air and wastewater permits. Activities will include supporting compliance with regulations and permits, sampling air and liquid effluents, basic environmental engineering, and preparing technical reports and procedures.
Set up and maintain liquid effluent sampling and monitoring equipment and rad air sampling and monitoring equipment.
Coordinate with crafts and facility managers to obtain and oversee maintenance and calibration of sampling and measurement equipment, maintain adequate spare parts and associated records. Ensure all duties are performed to technical and schedule requirements.
Conduct inspections of sampling and monitoring systems, develop and record deficiencies, initiate and track resolutions. This includes determining system operability, performing functional checks, and assisting system engineers in developing corrective actions to resolve problems.
Write and maintain sampling and monitoring operational procedures for the radiological air and liquid tasks. Provide training and technical direction to Radiological Control Technicians responsible for sampling procedure implementation.
Process raw data to obtain final measurement results and prepare compliance report technical data. This includes validating contractor analytical data, resolving data discrepancy reports, and interfacing with regulatory agencies regarding data submitted to demonstrate compliance.
Oversee development of new cloud-based database for managing radioactive air samples. Responsible for working with software developer to identify system specifications, create data input templates including chain-of-custody requirements, and test reporting outputs.
Conduct sampling and monitoring of process sewer and sanitary sewer effluents.
Conduct sampling and monitoring of radioactive air stack exhausts and ambient air monitors.
Successfully complete applicable PNNL training courses as assigned by their manager.
- Bachelor of Science degree in a technical, environmentally-related discipline (e.g., Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or equivalent) plus 0-3 years relevant work experience.
Bachelor of Science degree in a technical, environmentally-related discipline (e.g., Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or equivalent) and 3+ years relevant work experience, or an advanced degree and 0-2 years of relevant experience.
Familiar with Federal and State environmental regulations, particularly Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act compliance.
