Job Description

The Environmental Molecular Division seeks an environmental hydrologist in the area of multiphase pore to intermediate-scale hydrology and biogeochemistry with research interests in the environmental science domain. The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing the existing state of the art flow and transport capabilities, assist with the operation and maintenance of these capabilities, and participate in highly collaborative research with other scientists in the application of these capabilities to a variety of research domains. The micromodel and intermediate-scale laboratories have established history of excellence in contaminant fate and transport research in saturated and unsaturated subsurface ecosystems. We seek to extend these capabilities to study plant-soil-microbe-hydrologic systems including nutrient cycling, rhizosphere processes, and microbial biogeochemistry. The candidate will be responsible for engaging and supporting users from the EMSL user facility (link) with the design, execution, analysis and simulation of empirical data from the flow and transport capability.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 7 years of experience; MS/MA with 5 years of experience; PhD with 3 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. with 5 years of relevant experience

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related discipline plus 3-5 years of postdoctoral experience with demonstrated expertise in the development of flow and transport capabilities to address the scientific questions in saturated and unsaturated environmental systems as evidenced by a record of peer-reviewed publications.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience using reactive subsurface flow and transport simulation codes such as PFLOTRAN to help guide experimental design and interpretation of experimental results.

  • Preference will be given to candidates will strong background in biogeochemistry, geochemistry or fluorescence or Raman imaging systems.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience leading collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.

  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Must be a skilled professional who applies a broad basis of existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field.
