Job Description

This position develops and delivers on a comprehensive strategy for the Environmental Health & Remediation Sector at PNNL. The primary sponsor for this Sector is the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM). The Sector Manager is responsible for ensuring that PNNL’s science and technology capabilities support both near-term and longer-term DOE EM mission priorities. The Sector Manager is the primary PNNL interface with DOE EM and regularly interfaces with high-level DOE Managers, industry partners, universities and the international environmental community. He/she draws upon existing scientific and technical capabilities at PNNL and supports the development of new capabilities to support emerging EM mission needs. Of particular emphasis for the Environmental Health and Remediation Sector Manager is development and execution of a strategy to elevate the visibility of PNNL.

This position will be responsible for managing a PDM budget of $1.4M and delivering on sales targets in the $40M to $60M range.


  • Development of a clear science and technology vision and strategy that resolves operational challenges and supports the EM Mission.

  • In partnership with the EED leadership team, align Environmental Health and Remediation sector activities with mission outcomes to achieve opportunities for national impact.

  • Coordination of strategic planning, relationship management, business development, and project, activities related to environmental and remediation research.

  • Development and maintenance of strategic, influential relationships with Laboratory customers, other national labs, and industry leaders, as well as internal leaders and research staff.

  • Well characterized projections of growth areas and needed capabilities to perform that business.

  • Development and maintenance of a business strategy, including the maintenance of a business pipeline that tracks milestones and opportunities associated with the business plan.

  • Works with Program Management Office Directors to identify, evaluate, and accept project risks.

  • Works with Division Directors to identify, evaluate, and strengthen core capabilities necessary to execute programmatic committments.

  • Execution of the sector strategy and delivery of results.

  • Coordination and integration with other sector and directorate activities and priorities, such as those of the nuclear regulatory and nuclear energy sectors and theR National Security Directorate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with 12 plus years of experience; or Advanced Degree plus 10 years of experience. Must possess a robust technical background (education and experience) in nuclear waste remediation.

  • Excellent skills in sponsor interaction, team building, project management, and staff supervision are required. A sound knowledge of PNNL nuclear and environmental science capabilities and policies is required.

  • Effectively interacting with senior-level DOE and industry sponsors. Maintaining current business and developing new business for the Laboratory. Building a team, consisting of PNNL project managers and senior staff, to plan and secure work. Must possess a solid understanding of project management and have a track record of successful execution.

  • Must possess demonstrated leadership skills. Exceptional proven interpersonal communications, problem solving and human relations skills are also needed to work well with sponsors, PNNL managers, and PNNL staff. A reputation of integrity and trust are vital to earn trust with staff and sponsors. The ability to build organizational relationships and recognize strategic opportunities for success is needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with DOE-EM sponsor and mission objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with DOE EM Managers at both HQ and site offices.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple DOE-EM industry contractors.

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate DOE national lab capabilities to support the DOE EM mission.

  • Passion for working with scientist and engineers to solve important technical problems.

  • Ability to lead technical teams and work across an organization.
