Job Description

This position will provide support the Laboratory's research in Optimization and Control of Energy Systems. This position will focus on research related to development and application of advanced optimization and control theory for to enhance the reliability, resilience, and efficiency of energy systems including the electric power grid, buildings and transportation systems. A successful candidate will be required to conduct independent research, develop new ideas and contribute to research proposals, engage with sector managers in relevant areas, prepare manuscripts for publication, and present their work to clients and at conferences.

The candidate will serve as a technical expert and task lead on multiple significant projects or tasks. This will include:

  • Performing independently the activities assigned under the direction and guidance of the project manager, by selecting and developing technical approaches to project work assignments.

  • Leading portions of large, complex, formal documents, such as project reports, journal articles, conference papers, and presentations.

  • Contributing to technical proposals for developing new projects and business.

  • Working with senior staff and project managers to develop and implement project management plans for projects of various sizes.

  • Working in a team environment of high-performance multi-disciplinary experts.

Key responsibilities:

  • Providing technical input and lead portions of large, complex, formal documents, such as project reports, lead author on journal articles, conference papers, and presentations.

  • Selecting and developing technical approaches to project work assignments.

  • Contributing to technical proposals for developing new projects and business.

  • Working with senior staff and project managers to develop and implement project management plans for moderate to large projects.

  • Working in a team environment of high-performance multi-disciplinary experts.

  • Accountable to technical group manager and project managers for project development, execution, and closure.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level II: Building a reputation in the field of data science through diverse application of science and engineering principles and theories and develops novel technical approaches. Effectively teaming to share resources and optimize research at the group and division level. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0 years of experience, or PHD with 0 years of experience.

Level III: Manages small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Generates ideas for new proposals and participates in business development activities. BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0 years of experience or PhD with 0 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience.

  • Strong theoretical foundation in optimization and control

  • Good understanding of power systems operation, building energy management, building-to-grid integration

  • Strong programming capabilities in python, Modelica, Julia, C++, Java

  • Strong analytical, task management, and communications skills, both oral and written, and able to communicate clearly the goals, parameters, objectives and outcomes of their research
