Job Description

The Electrochemical Materials and Systems group within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is currently seeking an Energy Storage Scientist. The successful researcher will test and validate a broad range of stationary energy storage technologies in a new reliability test laboratory at PNNL. The technologies include; flow batteries, Li-ion batteries, Pb-acid batteries, Na-metal batteries, and other technologies that become available for grid services. The Electrochemical Materials and Systems Group at PNNL specializes in developing breakthroughs in advanced materials to drive deployment of applied electrochemical devices and systems. This position is for a materials scientist, electrochemist, or engineer in a related field of study with specific experience in testing and validating module scale batteries for grid applications. In particular, the focus of this position is to manage and oversee the day to day operation of the stationary energy storage reliability test laboratory at PNNL. In addition, the successful candidate should be familiar with designing methods for battery state of charge and state of health estimation, and integrating second use batteries for stationary battery applications. This position will work with a team of scientists and engineers conducting fundamental and applied research and development in energy storage devices. The successful candidate will be responsible for integrating system testing and validation of various battery technologies under grid duty cycles. In addition, the successful candidate will also prepare manuscripts for publication, present their work internally and externally at national/international conferences, and develop new ideas for funded research.

Minimum Qualifications

• BS/BA with 5 years of experience

• MS/MA with 3 years of experience

• PhD with 1 year of experience

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred, Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry or other related fields from an accredited college or university. A strong background in electrochemistry and hands-on testing expertise are a must. Candidate must possess excellent problem-solving skills based on thorough understanding of engineering and electrochemistry principles. Experience with testing of batteries on a module scale is a plus. The successful candidate must have demonstrated technical aptitude in a laboratory environment, including electrochemical testing and characterization techniques, experimental setup, operation, and data analysis, as well as a demonstrated ability in technical communication. Good written and oral communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively on a teaming environment are required.
