The Disruptive Technology group focuses on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, communications, analytics development, and systems design to serve as a flywheel for feeding technology advancements across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from mission focused, highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.
The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on design, fabrication, and evaluation of new high-performance radar imaging systems and/or wireless digital communication systems.
Fabrication and testing of prototype electronics
Design, fabrication, and testing of custom cabling
System assembly, hardware integration, and testing
Work with design team to review, edit, and make recommendations on work instructions for assembly tasks
Monitor inventories and purchase various electronic components, lab equipment, and supplies
Shipping and receiving logistics
Generate electrical schematics and wiring diagrams using Altium Designer software
Assist senior technicians and engineers with design and layout of multi-layer PCB's for embedded systems, FPGA's, and RF circuits
Work with PCB vendors during DFM checks, PCB fabrication, component population, and assembly
Work with engineers and other support staff to review design concepts and provide feedback for ease of assembly
The candidate will be assisting with multiple projects, supporting design, assembly and operational testing. The significant expectations for this position include :
Following written and verbal instructions in independently completing tasks assigned by senior staff.
Documenting work in laboratory notebooks.
Specifying materials for purchase and submitting related orders.
Accurately estimating time required to complete tasks, and meet deadlines as assigned.
Participating constructively and taking ownership in the success of interdisciplinary project teams
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level IV : Identifies and leads efforts to develop new procedures and methods for complex, non-routine processes. Critically analyzes design requirements, experimental plans, standard processes, etc., and proposes appropriate alternatives. Contributions are of sufficient value to have some impact on the outcome of entire project or group. Provides task leadership on project activities.
Level V : Provides imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions to a wide range of problems. Responsible for technical mentoring and provides critical input to supervisors for reviews. Develops specifications for project implementation and verifies that the final product meets expectations and requirements. Contributions are of sufficient value and scope to have significant impact on project or group goals. Leads technical tasks and sub-tasks to requirements of project/task leader.
- High school diploma and 6+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 4+ years of relevant work experience.
High school diploma and 8+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 6+ years of relevant work experience or relevant Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of relevant work experience
Experience or training in PCB manufacturing
Ability to create and correct schematics with design engineering input
Electronic systems test and evaluation experience
Ability to use multi-meters, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers to test and troubleshoot electronic hardware
Ability to read, write, and comprehend detailed written and verbal instructions, assembly instructions, test procedures, schematics, and other engineering documentation
Electronic circuit-level design (analog and digital)
Experience with Altium Designer and converting from various software design packages
Ability to quickly learn and utilize new CAD tools
Experience with creating symbols and library parts using library tools
Experience with standard shop machinery (drill press, milling machine, bandsaw, etc.)
Training or experience in electronics fabrication and testing
Familiarity with manual and/or automated soldering practices
Proficiency with basic power and hand tools
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and/or mechanical fabrication drawings
Basic computer skills
Experience with truck-and-trailer towing
