Job Description

The Electricity Infrastructure Group within Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is currently seeking a Power System Engineering Technician. This position will provide support to the Laboratory's research in electrical power systems and smart grid technologies. This position will focus on supporting Scientists and Engineers, and project managers with executing projects for electric power systems research.

This position will provide hands-on assistance with assembly, configuration, wiring, troubleshooting, calibrating, and testing of instruments and electric power systems hardware and software. The candidate will have a basic, foundational understanding of circuits and power systems, from Generation to Transmission to Distribution to Buildings to End Loads, and understands the makeup of the North American Bulk Electric System.

This position uses industry standard software for drawing and mapping circuits. Candidate must be able to read wiring diagrams, circuit board layouts, and solder.

Assists with equipment inventories, ordering of supplies and parts, laboratory maintenance and operations, and clean up.

The candidate will be required to work both independently and as a team, minimal supervision. Works independently and as a team, with minimal supervision. The Level 3 Technician is expected to perform activities assigned but under general direction and guidance of the Principal Investigator and/or Project Manager, or other Scientists and Engineers. Level 3 Technician may be asked to lead tasks and write procedures for others to follow. In addition, Level 3 Technicians may provide mentoring and training for Laboratory staff.

Performs assignments independently given general procedures and guidelines. Recommends for consideration technical approaches to complete assignments. Solves routine problems. Applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts to the field.

Impact primarily within and outside the Technical Group and their field of specialty.

This position reports to the Integration Team Lead, Electricity Infrastructure Group.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma and 4+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate’s degree and 2+ years of relevant work experience.

Must have clear communication skills, both with verbal and writing abilities.

U.S. Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant U.S. military hands-on experience is preferred over the minimum qualifications of an AA degree or HSD.

  • Pre-bachelor’s level Electrical Engineering students looking for full time employment while attending school part-time are highly preferred.

  • Familiarity with electric grid operational networks, including SCADA, and how to implement/use/troubleshoot SCADA is strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) is a plus.

  • Familiarity with field programmable gate arrays (FPGA’s) is a plus.

  • Familiarity with control room operations software is a plus.

  • Ability to program in at least one software language is a plus.

Special/Hazardous Working Conditions or Environment:

May have to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.

May be required to travel occaisionally (less than 4 times per year) for 1 week duration.
