The Disruptive Technology group focuses on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, communications, analytics development, and systems design to serve as a flywheel for feeding technology advancements across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from mission focused, highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.
The DT group is seeking one or more mid to senior career level Electrical Engineer (Telecommunications) with experience with 4G, 5G and other advanced telecommunications technologies to contribute to a wide variety of research, development efforts involving Advanced Communication Technology. The successful candidate should have experience in research and / or applied projects or programs.
Operating on the data-information-knowledge continuum, staff at PNNL employ diverse methods to confront significant problems of national interest. The successful candidate will have a mindset for data-driven research and discovery and be able to connect the 5G technology to enable tools and techniques of computational modeling, machine learning, human language technologies, cognitive science and semantic systems.
The incumbent will work as a technical contributor under the guidance of senior scientists and engineers, and will be responsible for performing the following technical tasks with the level of quality, timeliness, and cost, to meet required project and client expectations:
Strong written and oral communication skills – including the ability to author technical presentations and reports and carefully document experimental results
Interest and enthusiasm for working on diverse projects that will demand the development of new skills
Strong record of academic and job performance
Build reputation through application of scientific and engineering principles and theories, and developing technical approaches to solve challenges.
Effectively team to share resources and optimize research. Mentor junior staff.
Lead or contribute to technical proposals, project reports, scientific and technical products, and journal papers.
Assist with the development of new capabilities within the group.
In addition to high-quality support for clients (both internal and external), a critical part of the position is the ability to quickly and effectively develop and demonstrate skills and abilities that will lead to growth in responsibilities and career progression.
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level III : Ability to give guidance on new assignments, making selections on technical alternatives; independently complete more complex assignments. Leading or contribution to proposals. Defining and leading project work at a large task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. All while embracing expectations for quality, safety, and security.
Level IV : Ability to lead technical teams, making selections on technical alternatives; leading the execution of complex assignments. Leading proposal development. Defining and leading project work at a large task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. All while embracing expectations for quality, safety, and security.
- Scientist/Engineer III (Bachelor's degree with 5 years of experience, Master's degree with and 3+ years of experience, and PhD with 1 year of experience. Degree in electrical engineering. MS or above is strongly preferred.
Scientist/Engineer IV ( Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of experience, Master's degree with and 5+ years of experience, and PhD with 3+ years of experience. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science. MS or above is strongly preferred.
Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with an emphasis on telecommunications is preferred.
4G/5G Radio Access Network, high-frequency electronic hardware design, simulation, test, and measurement expertise.
4G/5G Network Design and Architectures
Wireless communication systems
Experience managing tasks with budget and deadline requirements
Demonstrated knowledge of and familiarity with modeling and simulation tools.
