Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking an early-career scientist to analyze and model watershed-scale hydrologic and biogeochemical processes associated with river-groundwater exchange. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is required: watershed hydrology, watershed biogeochemistry, and model-data integration. Successful candidates will work with a multi-disciplinary team of computational and experimental scientists focused on understanding coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical processes in a large dynamic river corridor. Required attributes include demonstrable motivation to publish in the best topical peer-reviewed journals, a growing record of peer-reviewed publications, and excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 2 years’ experience, MS/MA 0 years’ experience, PhD 0 years’ experience

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Hydrology, Biogeochemistry, Geoscience, Engineering (Civil, Geological, or Environmental) or equivalent discipline, with two years of post-graduate experience

• Familiarity with one or more watershed modeling codes, WRF-Hydro, SWAT, or equivalent

• Experience in designing conceptual models of complex real systems and implementing these in simulation codes

• Familiarity with high-performance modeling environments including compilers, linux shell scripting, and a computer analysis language to facilitate the operation, modification, and analysis of watershed models

• Strong skills in conceptual model development (e.g. gridding/meshing, mapping of boundary and initial conditions, source sinks)

• Strong data analysis and visualization skills using R, Python, or equivalent

• Experience with developing or modifying codes in a complex simulator

• Track record of scientific achievement in watershed or river corridor research

• Experience with developing creative research proposals

• Strong interpersonal communication skills

• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
