Job Description

The Risk and Environmental Assessment Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking an atmospheric scientist/engineer with a working familiarity and demonstrated competencies in the field(s) of atmospheric release, dispersion, and transport of radionuclides; environmental monitoring and characterization; and translation of modeled and/or process simulation results to a variety of applications across a range of sources and sinks (e.g., air, water, and soil).

Given the potential range of diversified knowledge and experience this position may include, the successful candidate is anticipated, but not required, to have experience and interests in one or more of the following areas including applied meteorology, atmospheric and meteorological modeling platforms, radionuclide and health physics principles, scientific programming languages (e.g., MatLab, Fortran, Java, Python), and application of codes and models used in support of regulatory compliance.


The incumbent will work under the guidance of senior scientists and engineers and will be responsible for performing assigned tasks with the level of quality and timeliness to meet required project and client expectations. Additionally, successful candidates will be comfortable working with a diverse set of research staff and project tasks, and possess the appropriate analytic, task management, and communication skills (both oral and written) to clearly articulate the objectives and outcomes of their research.

The hiring level and corresponding responsibilities, will be determined based on the education, experience, and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 2: With guidance, work to define and lead specific tasks of the project to meet scope, schedule and budget. Expected to independently contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Applies and interprets standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. Contributes technical content to proposals and develops business through excellent project performance.

BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience or PhD with 0 years of experience.

Level 3: Serve as the principal or co-principal investigator on projects or tasks. Expected to generate proposals and engage in business development opportunities. Develops and selects technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience or PhD with 1 year of experience.


The incumbent will be accountable to:

  • Project and/or Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project, field, and laboratory procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget.

  • Accountable to the Risk and Environmental Assessment Group Leader for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and project execution.

  • The NRC Team Lead for software development activities under the Radiation Protection Computer Code Analysis and Maintenance Program (RAMP).

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience or PhD with 0 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge and professional experience in the following areas:

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience or PhD with 1 year of experience.

  • Knowledge and use of atmospheric codes used to assess atmospheric releases, distribution, and composition of radionuclides (e.g., AERMOD, RASCAL)

  • Relevant course work and degree in physical or atmospheric sciences (ex. meteorology, physics), environmental engineering, or earth sciences.

  • Experience with regulatory compliance, National Environmental Policy Act and the Clean Air Act

  • Other preferred qualifications include experience seeking or securing project funding, working within technical teams, and the ability to manage research tasks or assignments.
