The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) premier national user facilities, seeks a Deputy of Science (DoS) to provide scientific leadership in developing a science mission and strategy for EMSL. This position is a platform for national leadership in environmental molecular science. In this capacity, the Deputy of Science will work with the broader science community to shape national strategies and priorities for new areas of science to explore in order to address DOE and national challenges in energy and environment. The DoS will work with the EMSL Director and leadership team to execute the strategy and represent EMSL to the broader scientific community as well as to our sponsor. EMSL is a U.S. DOE Office of Science user facility that provides access to innovative next-generation and often one-of-a-kind experimental and computational science capabilities to address DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) environmental and energy grand challenges. Successful proposals enable users to work with EMSL’s world-class scientists in BER-relevant science areas to address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions. The successful candidate must:
Have a deep understanding of BER’s scientific directions and appreciate how the EMSL user program and facilities can enable new scientific understanding.
Work with the EMSL Director to develop and continually evolve EMSL’s Strategic Science Plan.
Possess a national and international reputation in a science domain relevant to EMSL research with a scientific network that crosses into other national laboratories, academia, industry and professional societies.
Have strong record of demonstrated experience in leading peers/others through influence.
Demonstrated ability to conceive, plan and execute R&D with national/international influence.
Demonstrated history of successfully obtaining funding from external sponsors and funding teams of scientists to conduct R&D.
Be sought out for peer-reviews, as an invited speaker, and as a session chair at national/international meetings as a result of a technically productive career demonstrated through extensive high impact peer-reviewed publications.
Be recognized by Lab leadership, sponsors, and collaborators as providing leadership for national program directions with impact at a national level.

The Deputy of Science (DoS) for EMSL working with the EMSL Director and leadership team provides senior scientific leadership within EMSL by formulating and advocating a science mission and roadmap that advances the EMSL user facility mission, sets context for and is informed by EMSL’s capability investment strategy, and provides scientific integration across EMSL to help assure regional, national, and international impact in the biological and environmental sciences.
Leads the strategic scientific planning effort for EMSL and manages the development of critical new science areas that are required to build and grow the user program, expands upon and builds new effective collaborations, and delivers highly impactful science in key areas of interest to DOE, BER and the nation. Responsible for the intramural investments to establish, demonstrate and grow EMSL’s internal Strategic Science Area(s).
Leads the development of the annual science areas calls for user proposals. Defines topical areas for the calls with input with EMSL leadership and BER program managers. Leads the review process and recruits peer reviewers for science panels
Develops and promotes the scientific mission and strategy for EMSL in breakthrough environmental molecular science applicable to EMSL and BER missions. Represents the EMSL scientific mission and research with our sponsor BER and during our triennial review.
In close collaboration with the Deputies for Technology and Computing, manages the EMSL S&T investment portfolio to demonstrate impactful and high value new science areas and capabilities that EMSL provides to the science community.
In concert with the EMSL Director, develop and execute an outreach strategy that highlights EMSL’s scientific leadership, expertise and opportunities to the scientific community with an aim to attract new users to EMSL.
Works with BER program managers to schedule sessions to highlight EMSL research at PI meetings. Organizes sessions to highlight EMSL research at national meetings
Responsible for the organization of the EMSL User Integration meeting in collaboration with EMSL Leadership including formulation of science themes for the User Integration meeting, organizing workshops with users and science community, and training for current and potential users.
Bachelor’s Degree with 12 plus years of experience; or Advanced Degree plus 10 years of experience
Ph.D. or advanced degree in a science domain relevant to the EMSL user facility (molecular biology, chemistry, soil ecology, hydrology, biochemisty, geology, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, plant biology/physiology) with 7 years of experience. Experience managing large complex projects and with multiple participants.
Knowledge of BER science and strategy.
Understanding of the EMSL user facility and application of capability area(s) to a science domain.
