Job Description

The Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data (ACMD) Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking for a Data Scientist for its Data Sciences group. The primary emphasis of this position will be growing existing and developing new capabilities in the areas of Machine Learning and Deep Learning.


  • Designs, develops, and implements methods, processes, and systems to analyze diverse data.

  • Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, advanced mathematics, simulation, software development, and data modeling to integrate and clean data, recognize patterns, address uncertainty, pose questions, and make discoveries from structured and/or unstructured data.

  • Produces solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets.

  • Designs, develops, and evaluates predictive models and advanced algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from the data. Demonstrates ability to transfer skills across application domains.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following :

Level 2 : Leads specific tasks of the project to meet scope, schedule and budget. Leads elements or sections of technical products. Builds internal reputation through application of S&E principles and theories and develops technical approaches to solve challenges. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, and security.

Level 3 : Develops and optimizes capabilities at the division level. Develops external reputation. Builds effective project teams with membership across a group, S&E domain and/or directorate. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years’ experience or a Master's degree with 0-3 years’ experience or a PhD.

  • The selected candidate will have skills in one or more of these areas:

  • Machine Learning and Modeling.

  • Experience in the application of data analytics and data-driven modeling to scientific domains of interest for PNNL such as chemistry, biology, energy, and environment.

  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability for writing concisely and clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Engineering or Science with 1+ years’ experience.

  • Strong publication record.

  • Other preferred qualifications include past experience securing project funding, working with or leading technical teams, and the ability to manage research projects.
