The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks a cyber security engineer to join the Advanced Scientific Computing team. The EMSL is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility that provides innovative and breakthrough experimental and computational science that addresses DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) programs by providing access to more than 75 state-of-the-art instrumental and high-performance computing capabilities. EMSL users address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions.
The successful candidate will be part of an EMSL HPC system administration team that manages thousands of physical and virtual Linux machines. Responsibilities will include ensuring that EMSL HPC systems comply with PNNL cyber security policy by: periodic review and documentation of security controls, system scanning, monitoring of system logs, and response to cyber security incidents. In addition to being a member of the EMSL system administration team, the successful candidate will liaise with PNNL’s Unclassified Computer Security (UCS) staff to ensure compliance with UCS policy.
Ensures system security needed in operations are assessed, established, and included in design and development; executes security requirements definition, systems analysis, systems design, security hardening, security test and evaluation, and certification and accreditation.
Supports operational systems and performs activities such as vulnerability scanning, network, and system security configuration, etc.
Performs data and systems engineering functions to support cyber operations activities and systems. Engineers and deploys security and defensive countermeasures and controls.
BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 year of experience
Experience in HPC systems administration, including deployment tools like xCAT, Chef, and Ansible; resource management and scheduler tools such as Slurm; parallel filesystems such as Lustre and BeeGFS.
Understanding of networking principles and operations.
Familiarity with FISMA and current version of NIST Special Publication 800-53 and related federal guidance.
Understanding of how FISMA controls apply to Linux-based scientific computing systems with Low to Moderate impact levels.
Bonus: some experience with software development tools and methodology, especially continuous integration/continuous deployment platforms like GitLab-CI and Jenkins.
