Job Description

This position is responsible for providing cryo-EM user support for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

Activities include:

  • Assisting in the day-to-day running of a new Krios G3i, general lab maintenance, providing end user training, and large cryo-EM data set acquisition for single particle, micro-ED and tomography projects.

  • The incumbent will be expected to help maintain a smooth and efficient working environment. This includes troubleshooting sample preparations and setting up long semi-automated data collection runs for user projects.

  • Demonstrated substantial experience utilizing transmission electron microscopes and developing cryo sample preparation, imaging and analysis methodologies

  • Strong working knowledge of instrumentation and techniques used in structural biology and biochemistry laboratories

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative procedures quickly

  • Maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature

  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and demonstrate good time management skills

  • Excellent communication skills with strong ability to organize, document and analyze research data

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member to accomplish research goals

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic computer software for data generation and record keeping

  • Experience managing a laboratory supply inventory, reagent preparation, and waste disposal

  • Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials

  • Ability to follow lab safety regulations and lab compliance protocols

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 2 years of experience. MS/MA with 0 years of experience. PhD with 0 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or MS/MA with relevant experience with cryo-EM and biochemistry or structural biology preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience as a lead/key contributor for projects and/or tasks.

  • Demonstrated experience initiating projects, planning, and working independently to complete projects.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

  • Computer skills, including word processing, web searching, database entry, spreadsheet and/or database creation.

  • Able to work under pressure of deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.

  • Research experience in structural biology from data acquisition to atomic modeling

  • 1+ years experience in cryo-EM (single particle, micro-ED, tomography)

  • Previous experience using FEI Titan Krios with energy filter, phase plate and direct electron detectors.
