The Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks a Group Leader to lead the Computational Mathematics group, a scientific research organization of more than 20 staff scientists (including limited term employees such as postdoctoral research associates). This is a multidisciplinary group including mathematicians, computational scientists and engineers that focus on advancing theoretical, algorithmic, and applied aspects of Multiscale Mathematics, Uncertainty Quantification (UQ), and Data-driven Methods. The group encompasses two technical teams in the areas of Multiscale Modeling &UQ, and Scientific Machine Learning. The Computational Mathematics group works closely with other applied mathematics and computational research groups in the Division and across the Laboratory to advance PNNL’s capabilities in scientific computing for multiscale modeling, uncertainty quantification and physics-informed machine learning.
Our applied Mathematics research supports PNNL’s overarching vision of advancing the theoretical and applied foundations of machine reasoning for autonomous and predictive science. Through strategic internal investments supporting this vision, the successful candidate will have opportunities to advance theory and scientific computing capabilities to integrate multiscale physics-based models with data-driven approaches to create digital twins of complex systems.
Reporting to the Division Director, the Group Leader will be instrumental in developing and implementing the strategic technical direction of the group. The successful candidate will establish multidisciplinary collaborations and build diverse teams to support and grow our Computational and Applied Mathematics research portfolio. Group Leader responsibilities are split between line management duties (45%) and contributions to high-impact peer-reviewed research (55%) to include the following:
Provides leadership to advance Computational and Applied Mathematics broadly at PNNL, works with the Division leadership to set the agenda for fundamental Multiscale mathematics, UQ and physics-informed AI/ML research directions at PNNL, as well as provides excellent management of a productive and influential research organization. The successful candidate will be expected to learn quickly about the Division and group’s organization, capabilities and operations and take steps to maintain and/or advance the effectiveness and impact of the group, assist staff members to find opportunities for engaging in research efforts, and ensure that ongoing research programs led by group’s staff are productive and impactful.
Develops workforce and capabilities in the organization through effective recruiting and hiring while paying attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Maintains effective operations within the organization including the management of overhead budgets to achieve operational targets and helping to develop junior staff towards proposal development and self-sufficiency.
Senior candidates are expected to establish themselves as independent principal investigators through competitive proposals, serve as an active resource for others and mentoring early career staff in proposal and scientific career development.
BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience.
BS/BA with 9 years of experience, MS/MA with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 5+ years of experience. Strong preference for candidates with PhD in Applied Mathematics or relevant areas.
An extensive peer-reviewed publication list.
Project/program/line management experience and ability to manage to outcomes.
Demonstrated track record of strong leadership qualities, scientific talent and team-building and motivational skills, and strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to communicate group’s results and capabilities to technical and non-technical audiences.
A strong record of scientific accomplishments in an area related to Multiscale mathematics and Data-driven modeling, including significant publication history and history of attracting funding/grants is strongly preferred, as is prior experience with the DOE and other government agencies.
