Job Description

  • Serves as an ambassador to federal, state and municipal agencies and their staffers, important stakeholders, the community at-large, and local charitable and service organizations. Grows and protects the Lab’s reputation and fosters important relationships through community engagement and philanthropic investments. Develops and implements community/public affairs and social responsibility programs for the Laboratory. Manages programs that are aimed at developing advocacy for PNNL while promoting the Lab’s science reputation. Counsels all levels of Laboratory management on sensitive matters, risk identification and mitigation, messaging and strategies for all DOE and high-level dignitary visits; operating as the primary liaison with DOE’s Pacific Northwest Site Office. Provides event management expertise for VIP briefings, internal and external business-related functions, symposiums, conferences, program events, banquets, trade shows, etc., including project planning and budget development, vendor negotiations, post-event evaluations and reporting, and reconciliation of expenses. Maintains knowledge of compliance and regulatory issues.

  • Demonstrates leadership by translating strategy into specific goals and objectives;

  • Works on complex problems and provides solutions which are innovative and ingenious;

  • Builds and maintains independent relationships with internal and external audiences, working with all levels of Lab staff including senior management;

  • Demonstrates leadership by translating strategy into specific goals and objectives;

  • Works collaboratively as part of a team that delivers a wide range of high-profile complex conferences, events and dignitary tours;

  • Must be deadline driven;

  • Uses strategic, integrated decision-making in the logistical planning of multiple, complex meetings, conferences, and/or other events;

  • Must have seasoned business judgment, project management skills and relationship management skills;

  • Develops and manages project plans, including budgets, for conferences and workshops.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

  • Level 3: Works independently with little oversight required. Voluntarily and proactively provides mentoring and training for Laboratory staff. Seeks out collaborative opportunities. Manages projects of limited scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Interacts with senior internal and external personnel. May function as a project lead, giving direction to other exempt and/or nonexempt staff. Asks for assistance and/or delegates when appropriate.

  • Level 4: Works independently, has growing responsibility, no oversight required. Conducts mentoring and training activities for staff. Fosters collaboration and grows the skills of others. Manages projects involving diverse tasks, teams, and organizations. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate. Interacts with internal and external contacts as it pertains to organization plans and objectives. Functions as a project lead and gives direction to other exempt and/or nonexempt staff. Effectively deals with conflicting priorities and opinions among co-workers and project members. Prevents differences in style and approach between self and coworkers/team members from becoming barriers to developing relationships and or completing assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of experience; or advanced degree plus 2 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus 7 years of experience; or advanced degree plus 4 years of experience.

  • Experience working with and providing counsel to senior leaders;

  • Proven experience in developing vision, strategy and implementation of large complex, multifaceted events.
