Based in Richland, Washington, PNNL is one of ten United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) national laboratories. PNNL has four research directorates: National Security, Energy & Environment, Earth & Biological Systems and Physical & Computational Sciences. Our Research Computing Division (within which this opportunity resides) exists to accelerate scientific discovery within each of these directorates by providing access to advanced computational platforms while working directly with the research staff to foster their adoption. We strive to build a culture of computing across all research domains PNNL serves.
We are searching for a Senior Solutions Architect to work with scientists, researchers and developers working on critical problems that demand HPC, ML & AI and Cloud Computing.Solutions Architects are the primary technical contacts for our customers across our four research directorates. We need individuals who can develop positive relationships with customers, learn their requirements and work to bring solutions that enable their success. As the Senior Solutions Architect, you'll be at the forefront of helping our research directorates adopt innovative technology solutions. As a trusted customer advocate, you will help customers understand best practices around advanced architectures and solutions in major capability areas such as machine learning, AI, high-performance computing, cloud computing and scientific data management.
In this role, you will partner with customers to craft highly scalable, flexible and resilient architectures. You will bring together and share best-practice knowledge among the Research Computing community, especially in regard to HPC, ML/AI and Cloud Computing solutions and patterns. You will engage and collaborate with stakeholders to understand mission needs and cultural issues and formulate sound strategies and plans for technology adoption As a seasoned technologist, you enjoy tackling large analytical problems at massive scale and have a unique combination of deep technical knowledge, business acumen and strong interpersonal skills. You are passionate about helping customers build solutions leveraging the state-of-the-art AI/ML/DL tools on state-of-the-art cloud platforms.
Other activities would include:
Author or otherwise contribute to customer-facing publications such as white-papers, research proposals, CFP, CFIs, blogs, reference implementations, labs, and presentations to evangelize design patters and best practices.
Act as a technical liaison between research staff, Research Computing engineering teams and support.
Build deep relationships with senior technical individuals within the Research directorates to enable them to be advocates for our capabilities.
Work with cybersecurity, infrastructure, networking, and applications engineering teams to implement and maintain integrated edge-to-core security through all the capabilities we provide.
BS/BA with 9 years of experience, or MS/MA with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 5 years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, etc.
Deep experience in the field of AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and related technologies, with 5+ years of design/implementation/consulting experience building HPC, ML and/or cloud solutions.
Experience developing AI models in real-world environments and integrating AI/ML and cloud services into large-scale production applications.
Data science background and experience manipulating/transforming data, model selection, model training, cross-validation and deployment at scale.
Experience working with supercomputing and technical computing customers.
Experience with modern Deep Learning software architectures and frameworks including Tensorflow, PyTorch or other Deep Learning Frameworks
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math, Electrical Engineering, etc.
Experience with Machine and Deep Learning toolkits such as Kaldi, MXNet, TensorFlow, Caffe and Torch.
Experience using and running large-scale HPC resources, e.g., Slurm, PBS, etc.
Cloud development/deployment experience e.g., Docker and Kubernetes.
Use feedback and reflection to develop self-awareness, personal strengths and address development areas.
Ambitious and independent with the ability to multi-task effectively with minimal day-to-day direction.
Strong written and oral communications skills leading to effective collaboration with technical customers.
