At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, operated by Battelle on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), scientists in the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division work in a team-oriented environment to tackle some of the biggest challenges in atmospheric and Earth system science.
We are looking for a senior scientist with a demonstrated track record of scientific leadership in global atmospheric modeling to guide, build, and contribute to a wide range of exciting research projects. The successful candidate will lead efforts to use observations, theories, and advanced computational techniques to develop global atmospheric and Earth system models, including DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), and improve scientific understanding of aerosols, clouds, convection, land-atmosphere interactions, and other important processes shaping Earth system variability and change.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level 5 : Leader in the development and execution of directorate strategies. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory. Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self and project teams. Collaborates with other Labs, academia, industry and leads multi-Lab projects.
Level 6 : Key leader defining Laboratory and sponsor strategic initiatives to expand national and international capabilities for transformational solutions to complex scientific and technical challenges. Sought out to lead cross-directorate/ institution teams that influence Lab-wide operations and strategies. Defines and builds new business areas across directorates and institutions supporting self and multiple project teams across internal and external organizations.
BS with 9+ years of experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 5+ years of experience
Demonstrated expertise in the development and/or application of atmospheric models and their interactions with other Earth system components
Work history of leading interdisciplinary teams to develop and execute major research projects
Strong publication record
Excellent written and oral communication skills
PhD in atmospheric science or related field with over 10 years relevant experience
Internationally recognized expertise in climate modeling with demonstrated intellectual leadership on one or more specific research areas relevant to DOE’s Earth system modeling portfolio
Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising, mentoring early-career scientists, and leading multi-institutional teams
Experience with DOE/BER related models and/or modeling programs
