The Disruptive Technology group focuses on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, algorithm development, and systems design to serve as flywheel for feeding technology advancements into capabilities across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.
The Disruptive Technology group is seeking junior scientists and engineers with a background in the applied modeling of systems across multiple length and time scales, including electronic structure, phase field, finite element and chemical process modeling. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience developing modeling and simulation approaches to address the complementary roles of thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and heat transport in systems undergoing simultaneous chemical reactions and phase changes. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team and be expected to work closely with experimental scientists on interpretation of data and design of experiments. Experience working with data analytics methods is also desirable.
The successful candidate will receive guidance on new assignments from senior team members, while being expected to suggest preliminary selections of technical alternatives. The candidate will work independently to complete recurring assignments and define/lead project work at a small task/project level, reporting results to the larger team on time and within budget. They will be expected to contribute to proposals, embrace expectations for quality, safety, and security.
Level II: Ability to receive guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently complete recurring assignments. Contribution to proposals. Defining and leading project work at a small to medium task level, reporting results on time and on budget. All while embracing expectations for quality, safety, and security.
Level III : Ability to give guidance on new assignments, making selections on technical alternatives; independently complete more complex assignments. Leading or contribution to proposals. Defining and leading project work at a large task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. All while embracing expectations for quality, safety, and security.
- BS/BA with 2 years of experience MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience PhD with 0 years of experience
BS/BA with 5 years of experience MS/MA with 3 years of experience PhD with 1 year of experience
Hands-on experience working with modeling tools across the scales (including quantum chemistry tools, phase field calculations and finite element modeling)
Ph.D. in chemical engineering or related discipline with 3 years of experience
Fluent with engineering modeling tools
Familiar with engineering mathematics and documentation software (e.g. Matlab, Maple, Mathematica)
Experience with data analytical techniques such as Pandas and TensorFlow.
Ability to independently design, execute and report results of modeling and simulation for interpretation of experimental data
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse, interdisciplinary teams
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience managing tasks with budget and deadline requirements
