Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a dynamic early to mid career Research Scientist ready to leverage their strong expertise and skills in cancer biology within the world class collaborative Integrative Omics group. This candidate will lead and collaborate on applications that integrate genomic, proteomic and metabolomics approaches to enable a predictive understanding of cancer etiology, progression, and treatment in support of precision medicine objectives. The ideal candidate should balance expertise in mechanistic studies with hypothesis-generating studies utilizing the principles of biomarker science. Experience working with clinical and/or military patient cohorts is preferred.

Topics of research focus should include, but are not necessarily limited to, broad NIH and DOD priorities in basic and translational cancer research as exemplified by major initiatives such as the Cancer Moonshot, the cancer microbiome, and precision oncology. The candidate’s research strategies should emphasize an integrated systems approach focused on understanding and using integrated multiple data types (genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, environmental exposures, and microbiomics) to collaboratively build predictive models of cancer progression or response to therapy. Of particular interest is experience evaluating the effects of occupational, environmental or military exposures on cancer susceptibility, incidence, progression and outcomes.

  • The candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing research programs, to lead or co-lead proposals for externally funded projects, and engage in client interactions and project reviews.

  • The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record, a demonstrated ability to attract and carry out research projects, and have the potential to further develop strong leadership qualities; s/he will also have opportunities to contribute to the mentoring and development of junior scientific staff.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and ability to work in teams are required with demonstrated success in both areas.

  • Because of the sensitive nature of ongoing and proposed research programs, US Citizenship is required for this position.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 5 years of experience; MS/MA with 3 years of experience; PhD with 1 year of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biological Science, Biomedical Science, or related field with at least 5 years’ experience.

  • Ability to lead integrated research activities in support of existing and future projects, with responsibility for overall technical approach and execution

  • Experience working with clinicians, patient cohorts and/or military cohorts is highly desirable.

  • Due to the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of work at PNNL, strong communication skills and ability to work both independently as well as in a group setting with collaborators and others is necessary.

  • Demonstrated productivity and leadership of peer-reviewed publications.
