Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a dynamic early to mid-career Research Scientist looking for an opportunity to expand the scope of their research beyond a traditional academic setting. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to multi-disciplinary team science, and a strong skill set in integrative cancer biology at either a molecular or cellular level, as exemplified by a strong publication record and demonstrated experience as a project leader. The successful candidate will be expected to support and extend a successful externally funded [NIH and/or DOD] biomedical research program that leverages the world class capabilities of PNNL’s Integrative Omics group in proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics to enable a predictive understanding of cancer etiology, progression, and treatment in support of precision medicine objectives.

The position has the responsibilities and expectations of an assistant or associate professor: Establish and grow an externally funded scientific program, participate in multi-disciplinary teams across the research organization, contribute to ongoing research programs, establish or maintain a national reputation, build collaborations and train post-docs and students. While this position is equivalent to an assistant or associate professor position, PNNL does not have titled professor positions. PNNL does actively support joint appointments with academic institutions across the U.S.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to ongoing research programs aligned with broad NIH and DOD priorities in basic and translational cancer research as exemplified by major initiatives such as the Cancer Moonshot, the cancer microbiome, and precision oncology.

  • Further research strategies emphasizing an integrated systems approach on multiple data types (genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, environmental exposures, and microbiomics) in a collaborative environment to further understanding of cancer biology, particularly in translational studies related to cancer progression or response to therapy. Of particular interest is research evaluating the effects of occupational, environmental or military exposures on cancer susceptibility, incidence, progression and outcomes.

  • Lead or co-lead proposals for funded projects by a range of sponsors (NIH, DOD, foundations, etc.), and participate in outreach to funding agencies.

  • Mentor and develop junior scientific staff and interns.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5+ years of experience; or MS/MA with 3+ years of experience; or PhD with 1+ year of experience.

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: genomics, epigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, exposure science, and/or cancer signal coordination.

  • Strong publication record.

  • Demonstrated ability to attract and carry out research projects.

  • Due to the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of work at PNNL, strong communication skills and ability to work both independently as well as in a group setting with collaborators and others is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biological Science, Biomedical Science, or related field with 5+ years’ experience.

  • Ability to lead integrated research activities in support of existing and future projects, with responsibility for overall technical approach and execution.

  • Experience working with clinicians, patient cohorts and/or military cohorts is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated productivity and leadership of peer-reviewed publications.
