Job Description

The Risk & Decision Sciences group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a project hire CAD Designer in support of the Radiation Portal Monitor Project (RPMP) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This program was established to support the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's effort to develop and deploy radiation detection technology at the nation's ports of entry. It is currently a joint project between U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), with a goal of scanning 100% of incoming international traffic and cargo for illicit radioactive materials without impacting commerce. PNNL has been charged with the objective of deploying radiation portal monitor (RPM) systems at U.S. ports of entry and providing the scientific and technical expertise needed to design, integrate, acquire, deploy, and effectively maintain RPM systems. The successful candidate will produce and revise existing engineering drawings while working independently, or as part of a team, in a fast paced and often time sensitive environment.


  • Accurately estimates schedule and budget to complete assignments

  • Develop ability to perform difficult design calculations

  • May assist senior staff by coordinating the organization of the drafting packages

  • Effectively presents work in project meetings.

  • Explores alternate courses of action or methods to accomplish tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of technical work experience of Auto CAD training or Technical Institute Gradate(TIG) or AA Degree with Technical emphasis.

  • Based on project and client requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Must have an extensive knowledge of, and comply with ASME Y14.1 and group-defined drafting standards as well as PNNL procedures and standards used in day-to-day work and be able to assist junior staff in resolving problems associated with these standards:

  • Requires extensive working knowledge and experience with AutoCAD software.

  • Previous experience in Radiation Portal Monitoring systems placement and design is preferred.
