The Computational Biology Team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist. Expertise in software development, metagenomic sequence analysis, and multidisciplinary research particularly in the analysis of ‘omics data, including genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data is expected.
The Bioinformatics Scientist will contribute to fundamental science research programs studying microbial communities and environmental microbiology. The candidate will be responsible for data analysis from various high-throughput ‘omics platforms, including DNA/RNA sequence data, proteomics and metabolomics. The position involves work with high performance computing platforms, parallel programming, statistical computing, and data integration methods. The incumbent will assist in computational biology methods development and validation for metagenomic sequence analysis and data integration, work directly with experimental biologists in interdisciplinary teams, and to contribute to presentations and journal articles.
The ideal candidate will be proficient in one or more scripting languages (Perl, Python), as well as one or more statistical computing languages (R or MatLab). He/she should be experienced in software development practices (version control, unit testing, etc.) and should be familiar with parallel programming approaches for high-performance computing and handling large data sets. He/she should have a strong fundamental biology background with significant statistical computing experience and experience in processing and analysis of metagenome data, amplicon data, metatranscriptomics, and/or metaproteomics. The candidate should have excellent communication skills with a demonstrated interest in multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. The candidate should also have an interest in applying new approaches and knowledge to science problems associated with carbon cycling, bioenergy, climate change, and/or the underlying physiological and biological mechanisms governing host-microbiome interactions.
BS/BA with 2 years of experience; MS/MA with 0 years’ experience; PhD with 0 years’ experience
• Masters’ degree in bioinformatics, microbiology, biochemistry, biostatistics, computer science or engineering with at least 2 years’ experience.
• Significant experience with software development tools (GitHub), parallel programming experience, and Python or R development experience
