Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Associate Commercialization Manager in RICHLAND, Washington
Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 312327
Directorate: Deputy Director for Science & Technology
Division: Technology Deployment & Outreach
Join an organization where each day is dedicated to making a difference. At PNNL, our science targets the nation’s toughest challenges in national security and energy resiliency. That research often results in next-generation technologies ready to move to industry where they can make positive societal and economic impacts. For example, we developed and licensed the SLIM instrument, which has the potential to dramatically change how complex biological samples are analyzed. It is 1,000 times faster than typical analysis methods, with unprecedented sensitivity that can identify trace amounts of molecules.
Perhaps you’ll be the next commercialization expert that moves life sciences innovations like this to industry. We’re looking for an Associate Commercialization Manager to join our Technology Deployment and Outreach (TDO) team. In this role, you will work closely with scientists and engineers in Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate as well as researchers in the physical and radiological sciences to discover technologies with high-commercial potential that are invented through our research — and then set the strategy to transfer that intellectual property to industry. Many of these researchers are internationally recognized for developing life-sciences focused technologies. In partnership with your TDO colleagues, PNNL researchers and directorate senior leaders, you will have responsibility for the investments we make to protect and grow this complex portfolio of intellectual property. The successful candidate will work with researchers and management within assigned portfolio organizations to identify, assess, capture, and license technologies having commercial potential. This position contributes directly to PNNL’s financial performance through the identification and valuation of intellectual property and successful negotiation of licensing intellectual property. We are seeking someone with demonstrated experience working in or with private sector product development/marketing functions for life sciences, chemistry, or biology-based products.
Relying on your professional technical and business expertise, you will develop the full range of technology for commercialization in a way that contributes to TDO’s performance goals. Elements of this activity include: developing, maintaining, and sustaining working relationships with PNNL researchers and leadership; identifying research programs with the potential of resulting in technologies that can serve as the basis for future intellectual property; and identifying licensing partners and structuring/negotiating licenses or other agreements.
The successful candidate will discuss with PNNL researchers the specific technical development to improve the probability of their projects resulting protected intellectual property. The incumbent will negotiate standard licenses and agreements with external private-sector partners concerning PNNL technologies in their own portfolio. The Commercialization Manager will engage with TDO’s Key Market Commercialization Managers to inform them of their licensing activities. The Commercialization Manager will represent the Laboratory in licensing discussions and make commitments to partners with guidance from TDO senior staff or management.
Will establish strong working partnerships with other TDO Commercialization Managers and staff as well as with key PNNL researcher-inventors.
Will provide leadership to TDO programs in areas such as entrepreneurship, technology development, or Lab-system engagement.
Bachelor of Science degree plus 6 years experience, or advanced degree plus 4 years experience.
Experience should be in a technical/scientific organization or technology-based business.
Demonstrated experience working in or with private sector product development/marketing functions for life sciences, chemistry or biology-based products.
Scientific/technical background in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, or related.
Direct work experience in a research organization.
Demonstrated experience in developing and commercializing intellectual property based on life science, chemistry, biological technologies.
Demonstrated skill in negotiating agreements and program sales.
