Job Description

The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has one or more openings for Post-Master Research Associates to work on multi-disciplinary research that advances fundamental understanding of human and Earth systems.The team at JGCRI is a world leader in integrated analysis of climate change and employs the best available science to inform decision makers – including national and foreign governments and international organizations – on global perspectives of Human-Earth systems science. The successful candidate will support research at the intersection of energy, technology, climate, and policy.

This is a full-time appointment with benefits (renewed annually for up to 2 years based on satisfactory performance). The research associate will contribute to cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in close collaboration with senior researchers at JGCRI and will have opportunities to coauthor scientific journal articles. The associate will contribute to the development of software tools to analyze energy and environmental systems and future pathways. This will include working on JGCRI’s open-source tools including the human-Earth systems modeling framework, GCAM, and the CEDS historical emissions data system.

JGCRI researchers publish their findings in leading scientific journals and work with US Federal agencies, state governments, industry, foundations, and universities. JGCRI researchers are leaders in the international and national climate and global change research communities through prominent roles in science-based assessments of energy and agricultural systems and water resources. The work environment at JGCRI is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, focused on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges associated with energy, water and environment. Located in College Park, Maryland, JGCRI is a partnership between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland at College Park.

Note that the JGCRI offices in College Park are closed as of January 2021 and on-boarding and work will be remote until the COVID19 situation allows a safe return to an office environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate must have, or be expecting to receive, a Master’s degree in computer science or related field (or have, or be expecting to receive, a Master’s degree in another field and a computer science (or equivalent) undergraduate degree).

Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are necessary. Demonstrated experience in modern software engineering techniques is required. Experience in object-oriented programing required. Experience in C++ or R a plus. Research experience in the field of energy and environment is a plus. GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.
