Job Description

The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has one or more openings for a Post-Masters Research Associate to work on multi-disciplinary research that advances fundamental understanding of Earth-human system interactions. The team at JGCRI is a world leader in integrated analysis of the Earth-human system and employs the best available science to inform decision makers on the implications of changes in the coupled environment-energy-economy system. This position will focus on supporting research on the interactions between air pollutants with the earth system, earth and human system modeling, and interactions between Earth system changes and the human system.

This is a full-time appointment with benefits (renewed annually for up to 2 years subject to satisfactory performance). The research associate will take a supporting role in cutting edge interdisciplinary research in close collaboration with senior researchers at JGCRI and will have opportunities to coauthor scientific journal articles. The associate will contribute to a range of research projects, which may include modeling and analysis using JGCRI’s open-source Earth-system model Hector, and the human-Earth systems modeling framework, GCAM, which combines models of energy and the economy, land-use, agriculture, water, climate, air-pollution, and ecosystems.

JGCRI researchers publish their findings in leading scientific journals and work with US Federal agencies, state governments, industry, foundations, and universities. JGCRI researchers are leaders in the international and national climate and global change research communities, including extensive collaboration with government and private stakeholder. The work environment at JGCRI is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, focused on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges associated with energy, water and environment. Located in College Park, Maryland, JGCRI is a partnership between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland at College Park.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate must have, or be expecting, a Master’s degree in atmospheric sciences, Earth and environmental system science, engineering, computer science, or related field. GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are necessary. Research experience in the field of weather/climate, energy and environment, together with programming experience is a strong plus, as is experience with quantitative research.
