Job Description

A postdoctoral position is available at the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), with a focus on remote sensing of terrestrial ecosystem with an emphasis on the Solar Induced chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) and land surface modeling. This work will improve radiative transfer modeling of SIF, from leaf to canopy scale, and integrate it with land surface models for use in a data assimilation framework to study the role of terrestrial ecosystems in biogeochemical and carbon cycles.

The successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for:

  • Working both independently and collaboratively with other team members at JGCRI to identify and lead modeling and synthesis research.

  • Developing and implementing SIF radiative transfer models.

  • Leading data analysis, writing scientific and technical journal publications, and presentation of results at scientific conferences such as AGU.

This position will be based at PNNL’s Joint Global Change Research Institute in College Park, Maryland and duration of the appointment is up to a three-year period, contingent upon satisfactory progress and funding availability. The preferred start date is October 2019.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must have strong remote sensing (especially, vegetation radiative transfer modeling) and analysis skills. Experience with SIF is preferred. Candidates should have excellent communication skills with a strong interest in multi-disciplinary, collaborative research, and interested and capable of applying new approaches and knowledge to science problems. Good computer coding and data-analysis skills and demonstrated record of scholarly publications (peer-reviewed papers published in open literature) are required. An interest in open-source and reproducible science, and experience with Linux-based computing clusters are desirable.

A Ph.D. degree in remote sensing science, terrestrial ecology, Earth system science, environmental science, applied physics or a comparable discipline is necessary for this position.
