Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and its Maryland based Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) seek an early to mid-career scientist to support the development and application of economic theories and models, including the development and integration of multiple global and regional models of energy, water, land, and related systems with a major focus on economics, for study of dynamics and interactions of energy-land-water-economics systems. The assignment location is at the JGCRI in College Park, Maryland. The anticipated tasks will include:

  • Multi-scale economics modeling within the Earth-human systems models, including development of new capabilities (e.g., international shipping and other modes of transport models), processing and analysis of observational data and model simulations; and the use of these models/methods for scientific inquiry and decisions;

  • Contributing to dissemination of scientific findings of Earth-human systems research, modeling and analysis (e.g., publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific and technical conferences);

  • Close collaboration with interdisciplinary scientists at JGCRI/PNNL, other collaborating research institutions, and sponsoring agencies (e.g., US EPA and US DOE);

  • It is anticipated that the successful candidate will work on multiple projects with varying needs and tasks, with both human-Earth systems and economic models.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 5 years of experience; MS/MA with 3 years of experience; PhD with 1 year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD Degree in Economics, Public Policy, or related field, with knowledge of Earth-human system and economics models; post-graduation research experience, record of publication in peer-reviewed journals; and demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of multi-disciplinary science teams. The applicant must have expertise in economic theory and modeling and be able to select and apply these principles, theories, and concepts to economic modeling and analysis.

Experience:

  • Experience and knowledge of human-Earth system and/or economic modeling, such as econometrics, Computable General Equilibrium (CGE), Partial Equilibrium (PE), and Integrated Assessment such as the Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM, https://jgcri.github.io/gcam-doc/);

  • Scientific experiment design and analysis of research results;

  • Programming expertise in GAMS, C++, Python, and R;

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;

  • Teamwork and strong interpersonal communication skills for engaging with project teams at PNNL, at other national laboratories, and with the broader research community are also essential;

  • Willingness and ability to bring strong individual contributions to the team.
