Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber junior or senior high school students for intern assignment within the High School Student Research Intern (HS SRI) Program. This internship provides an opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM - or Computer Science) to work during the academic year with a scientist/mentor in a specified research area. Students attend regular classes in their school for one-half day.
The student will work at an established research site at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, and at the Joint Global Global Change Research Institute in College Park, MD. Duties will include helping with field measurements of soil respiration, tree sap flux, and forest structure; data entry and analysis; and learning to develop visualization and analytical code.

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in a public or private high school.
Applicants must be 16 years of age by June 2019.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).
Relevant Course Work - Basic high school science required
Computer Skills - Computer programming experience desirable, Excel/spreadsheet skills useful
Other Desired Skills - Ability to think critically, perform mathematical calculations, read in depth, and work carefully and independently
