Job Description

PNNL is seeking a leading, internationally recognized scientist in multiscale plant modeling to direct a multidisciplinary research team operating in the nexus of plant biology, microbiomics, atmospheric sciences, soil biogeochemistry, and high-performance computing.

As part of a proposal for a major 4-year research initiative at PNNL, we are developing a virtual plant-ecosystem model – a computational model describing how genomic and environmental variables inform predictions of ecosystem traits and responses at different scales. The purpose of the model is to enable a predictive understanding of the plant-microbiomes, atmosphere, and soil interactome, e.g., how the molecular, cellular, and organismal traits of the plant and associated microbiomes are shaped as a function of plant genotype and environmental variables. A central component of the work is to establish capabilities for multiscale plant modeling of the model grass Brachypodium distachyon, and to transition the effort to include non-model systems such as native grasslands and bioenergy cropping systems.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

•Lead the multiscale plant modeling effort, with particular focus on bridging the plant genotype-phenotype gap through molecular, cellular, and organismal scales. The candidate will work closely with the rest of the team guided by two main hypotheses: 1) Given environmental variables, ecosystem traits and responses can be predicted from the plant genotype; 2) Information in the plant genome propagates through plant-microbiome-soil-atmosphere interactions to inform emergent properties at the ecosystem level.

•Collaborate with scientists at PNNL’s Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user facility to attract and support external users to EMSL in plant multiscale modeling with a focus on molecular phenotyping.

•Build a strong research program through external grants and collaborative projects.

Minimum Qualifications

•Bachelor's degree with at least 7 years experience or a Master's degree with 5 years experience or a PhD with 3 years.

•Must be a technical expert who selects and widely applies principles, theories and concepts in a major field of specialization.

Preferred Qualifications

•PhD with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as an independent principal investigator in plant biology, computational modeling and/or bioinformatics, or related fields, and a strong demonstrated track record of publication, invited presentations and PI-led funded research.

•Expertise in computational modeling and/or bioinformatics with a solid background in plant physiology.

•Demonstrated ability for teamwork and interdisciplinary collaborative science.

•International recognition.
