Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a Senior Research Scientist to contribute to fundamental science research programs related to host-pathogen biology, infectious disease and/or cellular models of pathogen transmission and genetic manipulation. We are seeking a candidate with broad expertise in the design and application of experimental approaches to the study of pathogenic disease, evolution of virulence mechanisms, and development of medical countermeasures and early diagnostics to improve public health and biosecurity. This position features access to extensive research capabilities such as state-of-the-art laboratory space, accredited animal facilities, global genomics/proteomics/metabolomics expression profiling, DNA/RNA sequencing, advanced imaging through electron and confocal microscopies, computational modeling, and high performance computing.

The candidate will be expected to participate in and develop robust research programs that integrate expertise in host-pathogen interactions, systems biology, and synthetic biology. The candidate will participate in research teams utilizing core laboratory capabilities, interface directly with funding clients, and facilitate close relationships with regional and national scientific institutions for collaborations and partnerships.

Minimum Qualifications

Job level will be considered based on the candidate’s qualifications/experience.

- Pathogen Biologist, Level IV: BS degree with 7+ years of experience, MS degree with 5+ years of experience, PhD with 3+ years of experience. Must be a technical expert who selects and widely applies principles, theories and concepts in a major field of specialization.

- Pathogen Biologist, Level V: BS degree with 9+ years of experience, MS degree with 7+ years of experience, or a PhD degree with at least 5+ years of experience. Must have a national or international authority. Applying intensive and diversified knowledge of scientific or engineering principles in broad areas of assignments and related fields. An extensive publication list is required.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have interdisciplinary training in mammalian physiology, microbiology, and immunology, and experience in the use of synthetic biology approaches for genetic manipulation of host or pathogen signaling mechanisms. Experience in the use of biosafety level 2 and/or 3 experimental cell or animal model systems is strongly desired. Strong communication and writing skills as well as excellent teaming relationships across disciplines are required.
