Job Description

The Computational Mathematics group is seeking a research scientist to contribute to and grow our capabilities in Multiscale Mathematics, Uncertainty Quantification and Data Assimilation, with application to real problems in energy, environmental, quantum computing, and national security.

This position reports within the Computational Mathematics group and will support PNNL’s strategic research objectives and the development of new research projects in applied mathematics in the general areas of multiscale modeling, uncertainty quantification, and data assimilation. We seek a candidate with expertise in numerical analysis, stochastic partial differential equations, spectral methods, dimension reduction, sampling methods, sensitivity analysis, surrogate models, uncertainty quantification, and high performance.

It is anticipated that this individual will work closely with researchers across PNNL, Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing (NIAC) and the University of Washington and with senior research colleagues at other institutions. The position will have the opportunity for both extending/developing fundamental methods and novel applications of existing methods to problems critical to national interests.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree with 0-2 years experience or a PhD.

- Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

- PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or closely related discipline.

- Demonstrated research in Multiscale Mathematics, Uncertainty Quantification and Data Assimilation.

- Experience in one or more of the following fields: numerical analysis, stochastic PDEs, spectral methods, dimension reduction, sampling methods, sensitivity analysis, surrogate models, uncertainty quantification, quantum information theory, number theory, high performance computing.

- Ability to lead and/or work as part of a research team to carry out fundamental and applied research that will contribute to existing and future projects.

- Work with multiple collaborators on broad objectives and critical project milestones. Establish good working relationships with project teams.

- Contribute and lead publication of research in top-notch venues and journals.

- Strong communication skills and establishing the right frequency of communication with project team members.
