Job Description

A postdoctoral position is available in the Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) focused on interfacial dynamics in radioactive environments and materials (IDREAM). The vision of IDREAM is to master molecular-to-mesoscale chemical and physical phenomena at interfaces in complex environments characterized by extremes in alkalinity and low-water activity and driven far from equilibrium by ionizing (¿, ¿) radiation. The successful candidate will be based in the Chemical Physics and Analysis Group at PNNL and become part of a team focusing on developing a molecular-level understanding of the structure and chemical reactivity of water at complex oxide interfaces. We are particularly interested in a highly motivated, adaptable, and capable individual with a Ph.D., preferably in chemical physics or physical chemistry, and with a background in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) surface science techniques. The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to investigate the structure of nanoscale aqueous films on model oxide surfaces in UHV and the thermal and non-thermal reactions occurring within these films. The successful candidate will also collaborate with other scientists within the IDREAM team on related experiments, be expected to regularly prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, present their work internally and externally at national/international conferences, and be responsible for developing new research areas.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications

The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field within the past five years from an accredited university. Prior experience in particle/surface interactions, molecular beams, or surface science is desirable but not essential. Experience with fundamental techniques including LEED, Auger, FTIR, XPS, optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and temperature programmed desorption spectroscopy is highly desirable. Additionally, familiarity with mathematical analysis and modeling of transport and/or kinetic data is advantageous. Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively as part of the team are required.
